County Information
Grand Traverse County was organized by an act of the state legislature on April 7, 1851.
Grand Traverse County was originally known as Omeena County, set off and founded in 1840 from Michilimackinac County.
The county seat was Wequetong, an Indian Camp on the west arm of the Grand Traverse Bay, and was annexed to present-day Grand Traverse County. Later, Wequetong was renamed Traverse City, and made the county seat.
