Knox County was founded in 1792.
It was named in honor of Maj. Gen. Henry Knox who served as Washington's chief of artillery in the Revolutionary War and the Secretary of War in Washington's Cabinet. Was one of the founders and first secretary of the Society of the Cincinnati.
The county is at the geographical center of the Great Valley of East Tennessee.
Near the heart of the county is the origin of the Tennessee River at the union of the Holston and French Broad rivers.
