Nottoway County Information

The county was occupied by the Nadowa tribe, an Iroquoian people of American Indians, prior to the European settlers.  The Nadowa tribe lived on the only river in the county, the Nadowa.  The name was changed to Nottoway.  Formerly known as Nottoway Parish before the county established government.
In 1788 Nottoway Parish became Nottoway County.  This county prospered in its early days, due to tobacco.  The county contributed to the Confederate cause during the Civil War, creating two infantry companies: The Nottoway Rifle Guards & Captain Richard Irby's Nottoway Grays; Jeffress Artillery Battery and the Nottoway Troop of the 3rd Virginia Cavalry.  The two infanty companies served in the 18th VA Regiment.

The county seat is Nottoway.
