St. Martin Parish History
The parish was founded in 1811, from the division of Attakapas Parish.
The parish seat is St. Martinville.
In 1824, St. Martin Parish was divided in 1824 to create Lafayette Parish
In 1844, St. Martin Parish was divided, to create Vermilion Parish.
In 1868, St. Martin Parish was divided to create Iberia and St. Mary Parishes
 Iberia Parish divides St. Martin Parish into two separate areas, Upper and Lower St. Martin.

The parish endured a yellow fever epidemic in 1855, deadly fires and a destructive hurricane

Cattle raising made for a prosperous parish, and other profitable crops were cotton, sugar, corn, rice and tobacco. By 1860, there were over 7,000 slaves in the parish

The major commercial agricultural crop of current times is sugar cane, while crawfish are the major aquacultural crop.
