Harney County
In 1889, Harney, the largest county in Oregon, was carved out
of Grant County and named for Harney Lake. The lake, in turn, was named for Maj. Gen.
William S. Harney, commander of the Department of Oregon, U.S. Army, from 1858–59. H
arney was instrumental in opening areas of eastern Oregon for settlement.[Oregon Blue
Book] Larger in area than six U.S. states, Harney County was formed
in 1889 from southern parts of Grant County. As of the 2010 census, it was the fifth-least populous county
in Oregon, with cattle out-numbering humans by 14-1. The county seat is Burns. 60% of the
population of 7,700 lived in either Burns or Hines, the only two incorporated cities.
Much of the county is "federal land" managed by various federal governmen
t offices, and contains the nation's largest Ponderosa pine forest. The county also contains the Burns Paiute Indian Reservation
within and north of Burns, OR; this 760-acres reservation of the Burns Paiute Tribe is a
remnant of the former Malheur Indian Reservation, a 1.5-million-acre federal trust land from
the 19th century.
