DeKalb County History

DeKalb County was founded in 1837, from land in Cannon, Warren and White counties. It was named in honor of Baron Johann DeKalb, a Bavarian officer who accompanied Lafayette to America in 1777. He was appointed major general in the Continental Army. At the battle of Camden, he was killed while commanding Delaware and Maryland troops.
