Giles County was established in 1806 from Montgomery, Monroe, Tazewell and Wythe counties. William Branch Giles who was born in Amelia County in 1762, is the inspiration behind the name. He became a lawyer and was elected to the United States Hous e of Representatives, serving from 1790 to 1815. Giles also served on the Virg inia General Assembly until he was elected Governor in 1827. Giles County is the location of Mountain Lake, one of only two natural fresh water
