WELCOME TO LAMAR COUNTY ALABAMA GENEALOGY TRAILS My name is Veneta Aldridge McKinney and I am your Lamar County, Alabama host. I do not live in Lamar County, but grew up there. My family moved into the area in the 1830's, so I am interested in all aspects of the history and families of Lamar County. I will try to post as much data online as possible. We gratefully accept contributions of raw data such as census information, marriage, birth, death records, obituaries, county histories, biographies, old newspaper items - anything that would help someone build their family tree! If you have a love for history, a desire to help others, and basic web-authoring skills, consider joining us! If hosting isn't for you, we can use your help in other ways. Get the details on our Volunteer Page. [A desire to transcribe data and knowledge of how to make a basic webpage is required.] All data we come across will be added to this site. We thank you for visiting and hope you'll come back again to view the updates we make to this site. . . . CHECK BACK OFTEN . . . |
Lamar County was once named both Jones and Sanford county before it was the name Lamar was chosen. Jones County was established on February 4, 1867, from Marion County, named for E. P. Jones of Fayette County, with its county seat at Vernon. It was abolished on November 3, 1867. On October 8, 1868, the area was again organized into a county, Sanford County, in honor of H. C. Sanford of Cherokee County. On February 8, 1877, the county was renamed Lamar in honor of Senator Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar, member of the United States Senate from Mississippi. Its county seat is Vernon ![]() Photo by Nathon Morris Public Domain
