Volunteers Dedicated to Free Genealogy

My name is Veneta Aldridge McKinney and I am your Marion County, Alabama host. I do not live in Marion County, but grew up there. My family moved into the area in the 1830's, so I am interested in all aspects of the history and families of Marion County.

Our goal is to help you track your ancestors through time by transcribing genealogical and historical data and placing it online for the free use of all researchers.

If you have a love for history, a desire to help others, and basic web-authoring skills, consider joining us!  If hosting isn't for you, we can use your help in other ways.  Get the details on our Volunteer Page.
[A desire to transcribe data and knowledge of how to make a basic webpage is required.]

We regret that we are unable to perform personal research for folks.
All data we come across will be added to this site. We thank you for visiting and hope you'll come back again to view the updates we make to this site.

COUNTY INFORMATION

Marion County was established on February 13, 1818. At its beginning, Marion County consisted of the present day Alabama counties of Marion, Walker, Winston, Lamar, Fayette, Pickens, Greene, Western Tuscaloosa County; and all of present day Lowndes and Monroe Counties, MS east of the Tombigbee. The Mississippi counties were lost in 1820-21 when the state line became official. The remaining counties gradually splintered off until the present shape of Marion was formed in 1866 when Lamar became its own county.  Its name is in honor of Francis Marion of South Carolina, general in the American Revolutionary War. Its early county seat was Pikeville. After the counties had splintered off, the county seat was moved to Hamilton so it could be located in a more central location. In March 1887, the court house burned and all documents from the time of the establishment of the county to 1887 were destroyed.
