Sebastian. The county has two county seats. One is at Fort Smith and the other is at Greenwood. The county is in the west central part of the state and is in the Arkansas River Valley. It was created by a legislative act on January 6, 1851 from Crawford, Scott and Polk counties. It is home to the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, which was established in 1928. The Fort Smith National Historic site encompasses the remains of the first Fort Smith (1817-1824), which was established to keep peace between the settlers and the Cherokee arriving from relocation from the Appalachian Mountain regions to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears.
