Volusia County was created from Orange County by the Florida Legislature on December 29, 1854. It was named after its largest community, Volusia.

At one time this area was indigenous to the Timucua and Mayaca people. In 1768, Andrew Turnbull, a Scottish diplomat, founded the colony of New Smyrna in southeast Volusia County. At that time the area was part of the province of British East Florida. In 1777 the colony was permanently abandoned and the settlers relocated to St. Augustine.

Today, the county is most known for Daytona Raceway and Daytona Beach.
