Alexandria maintains a modern, highly trained, technically skilled, energetic, diverse, and well-equipped police department, with a current authorized strength of 322 sworn, 104 full-time professional employees, and 28 part-time professional employees. Our staff provides courteous, efficient, and timely service to residents, visitors, and businesses in our City.

Community Police Academy

The 9-week Alexandria Community Police Academy provides an opportunity for residents to learn about various aspects of the Police Department, such as administrative philosophy, internal policies, and the guiding principles of law and ethical conduct governing the delivery of police services.
Speed Camera

Speed Camera Safety Program

In 2020, the Commonwealth of Virginia passed a law authorizing the use of speed cameras in school zones and work zones. Alexandria is joining several communities across Virginia in implementing a speed camera program.

Body Worn Cameras

In April 2023, APD will begin deployment of Body Worn Cameras (BWC) throughout the Department. This in turn will create greater transparency and accountability in its interactions with the public.

Deployment of the cameras will be on a rolling basis, with a goal of ensuring every sworn personnel is issued a camera as a part of their required gear within a year.

The Office of the Chief is composed of staff who report directly to the Police Chief, including finance, public relations, and professional responsibility (formerly known as Internal Investigations).
