What We Do

The GIS Division of Fairfax County's Department of Information Technology is tasked with developing, maintaining, coordinating, and distributing GIS data and technology to Fairfax County government agencies and residents. The division also provides products and services for the public. A wide array of interactive mapping applications focus on a variety of Fairfax County data and services. Dozens of map layers, aerial imagery, and other data are available to view and download from the data page. The FAQ page has detailed information on many topics, including parcel information, finding maps, and basic GIS explanations. Go to the menu dropdown or Department Resources to find these links.

An export from the Digital Map Viewer

 

 

The Digital Map Viewer is an online mapping application that provides users access to official Fairfax County map books, such as the Property and Zoning maps. The maps are in PDF format and are free to view, download, and print.

The Historical Imagery Viewer is an online mapping application that provides access to Fairfax County’s aerial imagery collection dating back to 1937. Tools and widgets are provided in the app to draw & annotate the map, and export PDFs in letter (8.5 inches by 11 inches) and tabloid (11 inches by 17 inches) sizes.

While the Digital Map Viewer exports PDFs of tax book pages focused on tax map grid cells, the Map Wizard web map application provides access to the same information at custom extents and scales. Consider using this application if needing to an export for a property at borders a tax grid cell.

A map, data table, and filters in the MAR pertaining to address informationThe Fairfax Master Address Repository (MAR) is the authoritative source for site addresses in Fairfax County. The Fairfax Master Address Repository Application is a web application which provides access to addresses and street names in the MAR. Web services and locators are also available for applications to retrieve or validate address information against the MAR.

Elected officials for the Fairfax County government center displayed from a click in a mapMy Neighborhood is an interactive mapping application that provides local information such as voting place, elected officials, assigned public schools, and other nearby public facilities, including police and fire stations. The application also includes links to other public web resources providing information about real estate tax assessments, land development, and zoning.

A search bar with an address typed in to validate if it is a county addressThe Validator is a simple but powerful application to verify the accuracy of addresses, street names, and parcel IDs for all real property in Fairfax County. While other mapping applications may be more flexible in returning results, The Validator connects directly to the county’s GIS database of actual, verified address, parcels and street names, so the results can be trusted to exist in real life.

The Virtual Fairfax application combines a variety of 3D datasets into an immersive experience to view Fairfax County. Photo realistic buildings, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) points, and generalized building mass models may be toggled on and off to view different 3D features and their relationships to each other.

The Digital Map Viewer application has been updated with the 2025 Property and Zoning map books. In addition, the Map Wizard application may be used to create free, print-ready maps of official Fairfax County map book data with custom scales and extents.

This year is the 25th anniversary of GIS Day, an annual event celebrating geographic information systems-based technologies. The 2024 GIS Excellence Gallery online interactive collection contains 33 entries from 25 county business areas, highlighting the innovative use of GIS across the county.  Representatives from county agencies were on site at the Government Center on GIS Day 2024 to demonstrate and discuss the spatial tools and products that help them in their work, improve business processes, and engage and inform the public.
