 Crawford County, Indiana

Established in 1818, Crawford County is located in Southern Indiana with the Ohio River as it's southern border. Thomas Stroud was the first non-native settler of Crawford County, Indiana, as indicated by the resources on the additional historical facts page, which were graciously abstracted by Lance Stroud - a descendant of Thomas Stroud.

Early settlers of Crawford County were Peter Peckinpaugh, who moved back to Kentucky for fear of Indians but returned later; Gorry Jones, Henry Green, James Totten, Henry Fullenwider, William Mcay, Andrew and Joseph Kinkaid, Moses Smith and Robert Fields.

Some say Crawford County was named for William H. Crawford, who was U.S. Treasury Secretary in 1818. Others say it was named for Col. William Crawford, who fought in the French and Indian War and Revolutionary War, and who was burned and scalped by Indians in 1782 in what in now Wyandot County, Ohio. The county seat was in Leavenworth for several decades but eventually moved to English.

Daniel Weathers was selected to be the first sheriff.
